After the Dance / NT Archive 13.6.2012

Yksi kesäkuun matkan päätarkoituksista oli käydä National Theatren arkistossa katsomassa After The Dance ja Frankensteinin toinen versio. Ja olin varannut ajan keskiviikkoaamulle. Eli aikainen herätys, junalla Wokingista Waterloohon. Arkisto aukeni klo 10 ja menin sinne sitten heti silloin. Ihan kivenheitto asemalta. Arkistossa on asiakkaiden käyttöön 4 päätettä ja siellä saa sitten katsoa tallenteita näytelmistä ihan ilmaiseksi. Kunhan varaa ajan.

Aloitin After The Dancella.

David and Joan Scott-Fowler were 'Bright Young Things' of the 1920s, whose ambition is to treat everything as trivia and to live lives of pure sensation. They always maintained that they married for amusement and not for love. However, Helen Banner, a serious young woman, has fallen in love with David and is determined to change his lifestyle, free him from Joan, stop him from drinking and re-awaken the serious historian in him.

Unfortunately, Joan does indeed love David very deeply and is trapped by her posture of carelessness. At a party they are holding, Joan is bruised by the clash between private agony and public joy and she kills herself. The characters are shattered by the revelation and even though David and Helen plan to get away from this life, the play ends with a clear sign that David will continue as he did.

Näytelmä sai hirveän upeat arvostelut aikoinaan, ja ihan syystä.

Yksi erityisen hieno juttu oli kuulla Benedict soittamassa pianoa!

The Guardianin kriitikko Michael Billington kirjoitti mm. näin:

But what makes the play so gripping is Rattigan's ability to see the sadness of these doomed fantasists as well as their superfluity.

The marvel of Sharrock's production, however, lies in its microscopic detail: there's a moment when the magnificent Nancy Carroll, as David's wife, shattered by the news that he plans to leave her, simply sits rock-still in a chair conveying a wealth of unspoken torment. But everything about this production is dead right, from the orgiastic partying of the ageing socialites, even including a glimpse of oral sex on a balcony, to the use of a haunting 1920s foxtrot, Avalon, with its echoes of Puccini.

The individual performances are excellent. Benedict Cumberbatch conveys not just the surface smoothness of the self-destructive David but also the intelligence of a man who realises he is a wastrel. Faye Castelow is all swan-necked determination as the naively redemptive Helen, John Heffernan captures the knotted anguish of her discarded boyfriend, while Adrian Scarborough is unimprovable as a parasitic house guest who acts as a Pinerotic raisonneur.

 Nancy Carroll & Benedict

Charles Spencer, Daily Telegraphin kriitikko, kirjoitti näin:

The performances are first rate. Nancy Carroll is almost unbearably moving as the apparently jolly and resilient Joan Scott-Fowler who has never quite dared to reveal to her husband just how much she loves him. Her eerily quiet sobs and shrieks when she learns he is trading her in for a younger model provide the play’s emotional heart.

Adrian Scarborough gives a funny and touching performance as the apparently parasitic friend, delivering one-liners with delicious aplomb while slowly revealing a deep sense of morality. Benedict Cumberbatch is compelling as the alcoholic husband who sees a chance of a better life but realises he cannot bring it to fruition.

New Statesmanin kriitikko sanoi näin: On paper, it might be hard to see why she falls for him, but on stage Benedict Cumberbatch, from the moment he enters, radiates a charisma that could blind a girl to his emotional immaturity and selfishness.

Tämä oli kyllä teatteria parhaimmillaan. Tykkäsin ihan hirveän hurjan paljon :-) Arkistossa meni viitisen tuntia, koska katsoin After The Dancen jälkeen myös Frankensteinin toisen version.
